Markit鈥檚 most shorted ahead of earnings

US oil and gas company Sm Energy, French food retailer Casino Guichard and Japanese real estate firm Properst were the most shorted stocks ahead of this week鈥檚 earnings announcements.
Short interest has surged by almost a fifth to sit at in the past month to sit at 28 percent, despite a jump in share price, bringing and is back to highs last seen in January 2015 and making it the most shorted stock in North America, according to Markit.
Most shorted in Europe was Casino Guichard with 9 percent of shares outstanding on loan.
Casino joined Tesco with 6.5 percent of its shares sold short.
European retailers continue to attract strong short interest as the industry battles against price deflation and aggressive competition from German discounters Aldi and Lidl.
Markit noted that Tesco has staged an 鈥渋mpressive rally鈥, rising 28 percent so far this year.
Despite the recovery, short sellers also increased positions by 41 percent with only some marginal covering in recent weeks.
Most shorted in Asia Pacific and seeing a significant rise in short interest in 2016 was Japanese real estate firm Properst with 11.8 percent of shares outstanding on loan.
Markit said shares in the company are rising steeply this year, up by 70 percent at time of writing.
